I know, I know a common question…
After a few years of comfortable but increasingly colder winters, websites and newspapers in the UK are starting to report “Almost the coldest winter since 19whenever…” and people are remembering winters from their childhood where there were great snowfalls – but in reality when the photos come out were not as great as they remember (Just like the size of Creme Eggs and Mars Bars)
The UK has once again fallen foul of being slightly un-prepared for the onset of winter, and the snow you normally only see in Hollywood and Elstree films is now lying across the United Kingdom.

Companies are losing fortunes with staff taking snow days or having their employees falling for the other type of flu that’s out there.
So again, back to my question…
If there’s Global Warming why is it so damned cold?
On the back of the recent climate change publicity we are led to believe that the world is slowly getting warmer, sea levels are rising and we’ll soon have no ice caps.
How can this be so if were having this bad, cold winter?
I do believe that we are having an impact in assisting mother nature with her cycle of hot and cold spells, Ice Ages follow periods of Warming which is followed by periods of Cooling, it’s all a part of nature.

The world is currently in a cooling period, assisted by the relatively low activity from our main source of heat, parliaments debating what happens when we run out of oil, the Sun.
So with this in mind how can they state that Global Warming is indeed upon us?
Politicians have said that:
- Rivers are drying up
- Water levels on lakes are dropping
- Desert areas are increasing
- and that the sea levels are increasing.
Can this be truly relative to the climate?
Don’t we:
- Dam rivers for Hydro Electricity (China, USA)?
- Remove the nutrients from the ground through Agriculture (Brazil, Africa)?
- Reclaim land from the sea to create land masses (Netherlands, Dubai)?
So what does this show?
Nothing! it shows that there are ways of reading information to co-incide with a particular view.
So once again back to my question…
If there’s Global Warming why is it so damned cold?
The film The Day after tomorrow tried to explain that the Atlantic Gulf Stream, which, stretches from the Caribbean and Florida northwards to the coast of Scotland and Norway, is responsible for keeping a warm current and a fairly constant temperature of the Atlantic, with the cooling of the Oceans the temperature of the Gulf Stream drops and its effect on the surrounding land is also lessened. This is what was shown in the film the drop in ocean temperatures brought the onset of the full ice age…
You can see the effects of the Gulfstream in Ireland, Scotland and Norway.

No it's not in the Caribbean it's Logan Botanic Gardens in Scotland!
Now does this mean that the Gulf Stream is cooling? I don’t know, I am not a climatologist.
Since the Earth and the Sun are in a cycle surely you should be expect to get weather which to generations appears to be abnormal but in reality is normal.
If the sun is in a low activity and the earth cools surely the winters will be hard, if the sun is in a high ativity phase surely the summers will be hard?
So have I answered my question? I don’t think I have but “Climate Change” and “Global Warming” aside, doesn’t common sense tell you, if it’s winter, it can get cold, so be prepared for it!
So I’ll just be wrapping up warm, and think about wonderful snow covered beaches of Mauritius and the Maldives!
In all extremes of weather please do a good deed:
If you have elderly relatives or neighbours make sure that they are OK, have a cup of tea with them, just remember them!
